The Four Seasons

Grade one science can be so...boring. There is just something exciting about chemical reactions and gravity, forces and electricity(none of which is in my curriculum for grade one). But this year I decided to teach daily and seasonal changes within the context of First Nations and Metis teachings. We compared a scientific view of the seasons including the rotation and revolution of the Earth to the traditional legends and stories of our First nations peoples. My favourite part of this unit was the Metis inspired artwork done by my students to represent a season of their choice. I really was impressed with the way they viewed our inspiration piece, The Giving Tree by Leah Dorion
I'll just post a few of my favourites. I will definitely try this way of integrating social and science next year.
